Academic Symposium
Nelly Goletti Theatre
11:00 - 11:45 a.m.

Academic disciplines have always been revised and reshaped by new ways of thinking. They have also experienced more dramatic transformations when paradigm shifts replace older perspectives. Recently, many fields have started to critically examine the breadth of assumptions underlying their conceptual frameworks and what they teach their students.  In the current academic year, first-year Marist students are all reading Clint Smith鈥檚 How the Word is Passed, an incisive look into how the presentation of America鈥檚 history in public forums has been distorted by racism and an exclusive approach to celebrating America鈥檚 past.  This symposium featured Marist professors, drawn from disparate disciplines, who spoke to how their own fields are addressing new ways of approaching the diversity of attitudes, equitable methodologies, and inclusive frameworks.

Symposium Participants:
John Bartlett, Fashion Program Director
Addrain Conyers, Associate Professor of Criminal Justice
Steven Garabedian, Associate Professor of History
Lisa Stephens, Senior Lecturer of Chemistry
Moderator: Nicholas Marshall, Associate Professor of History
